Relevance of books written prior to 40mm ball change

I feel Larry's book, "Table Tennis: Steps to Success" still has relevance despite the equipment changes and rules changes that may have occurred since it was originally written.  My assertion of relevance of Larry's book was challenged in another forum when I quoted a passage from Larry's book that one should place the ball deep into the opponents court when playing against a blocker.

Is there some reason why this book and specifically this tactic against a blocker should be considered as having lost relevance?  I actually think that this particular tactic has gained in relevance with the 40mm ball.  I'm certain any book written prior to the 40mm ball could use a bit of up dating but I don't believe these books need to be completely rewritten to accomdate the changes.

Is there reasons to believe that books written prior to the 40mm ball change have lost relevance to the point where they are no longer a valuable resource?

I don't know that Larry's book was written before the change to the 40mm ball but the poster that challenged the information assumed that it must have been.

Re: Relevance of books written prior to 40mm ball change

Hi deriderj,

I'm curious who would think that keeping the ball deep against a blocker is no longer important just because the ball is slightly larger. If you put the ball short against a blocker, he jab-blocks it down your throat and/or gets extreme angles and/or rushes you. Keep the ball deep, and all of this becomes far more difficult.

Other than using slightly thicker sponge, the game didn't change dramatically when it went from 38mm to 40mm balls. It's tougher to use extreme spins, and slightly easier to keep the ball in play, but it's all a matter of degree. The strokes haven't changed because of the 40mm ball. You just use them slightly different, i.e. slightly longer rallies, so you have to work a bit more for the point.

I wrote the original version of Table Tennis: Steps to Success in 1993, and did a rewrite in 2007. However, there weren't any major changes in the rewrite due to the 40mm ball.

What forum is the discussion taking place? I don't see it at about.com, mytabletennis, or OOAK.

I'm with you 100% on your last post so thank you for validating my thoughts and perceptions on this.  The discussion is taking place on  mytabletennis, here is the thread:  http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=41696&PN=1&title=how-to-beat-players-who-are-good-at-blocking .
